took a tip from @southbayaqua and removed all but a tiny center base layer of amazonia mixed with power sand, I figured that might add some porosity to the base layer as well as getting some of the charcoal bits found in power sand. Hope I will not live to regret that 1/2cup of sub-substrate choice.
